WARNING: GAMING RELATED RANT TO FOLLOW, PROBABLY NOT ENGLISH TO MOST
Ok, so I’m reading specs of the next generation of consoles (PS5 and XBOX 2) and yeah great, same exponential increase in blah blah blah and yadda yadda yadda. Yep, I’m gonna be a sceptical asshole and scoff at everything until I play it and fall in love with the medium all over again.
2018 was an interesting year if you paid attention. The community drew a lot of blood, most notably against EA for their Star Wars Battlefront II loot box bullshit, but look up what they did over Fallout 76 and Battlefield V. Hopefully they realized their focus groups were SHIT, and while they probably made millions, we fuh-king carpet bombed their quarterly projections. More blood was squeezed from the stone than ever, and I can smell it. Can you?
Are we not in a position to make demands? I think so. There are two reasons why I, if not met, will for the first time in 30 years, abandon the console market forever. I had this idea last year, and every stupid fucking move has made this decision worth more and more peace of mind. PC players can already play with Xbox One users for some games and that’s just going to grow, so I’d way rather have the local nerd build me a decent rig than pay for another shitty machine that will have a better version in 6 months, which the games were intended to be played on in the first place. Which brings us to the highest priority demand in my book.
CROSS PLAY. I have a game. My friend has the same game. We want to play together. Too bad, because we have different systems! Think of how stupid and primitive this is going to sound in 10 years. My son plays Fortnite on his Switch, with a friend who is on their PC, and another on Xbox and yet another on PS4. Together. And yeah, I know, fuckn Fortnite, but at least that game proved it can be done. You opened the gate for one, now you have to open it for all. I can only speak for me, hopefully others and maybe persuade a few, but this is immediate disqualification. Most exclusives run on PC, and so do most controllers, it won’t hurt me a bit.
DATA. Calm the fuck down, already. Not everyone lives in ultra high-speed areas and could live just fine on cheap, easy 200G / month. But nooooo, some streamers start whining about level 3 helmets on Vikendi and the rest of us have to wait 3 hours to play again because now there’s a 15G update, the third in a month. For multiple games. To correct shitty math that should have been figured out before the disc was pressed. Once a month, maybe? Tops? Here, I can boil it down to the base elements: it fucking sucks.
No flashy final statement, I just wanted to use what the good side of the internet is made for and put it out there.
